Understanding Your Dog’s Nutritional Needs
Every dog is an individual. Factors like age, breed, activity level, and whether they are neutered all play a massive role in how many calories they burn. Our calculator uses the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula, which is the gold standard in veterinary nutrition.
What is RER?
RER is the energy used by a dog at rest for basic functions like breathing and heart rate. We then apply “Life Stage Factors” to find the total maintenance energy needed.
Why use Body Condition Score?
Weight alone doesn’t tell the whole story. A muscular dog might weigh more but be at an ideal condition. BCS helps us adjust the calorie target to reach a healthy fat-to-muscle ratio.
The 10% Treat Rule
To prevent nutritional imbalances, treats should never exceed 10% of your dog’s daily calorie intake. Our calculator automatically sets this limit for you.
Water Intake Importance
Hydration is just as important as food. Generally, a dog needs about 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight, but this increases with activity and dry food diets.
